Collegiate Recovery Community to benefit from Heroes 6K

Monday, September 21, 2015

The Heroes in Recovery 6K, sponsored by the Foundations Recovery Network, will benefit UNC Charlotte’s Collegiate Recovery Community (CRC) for the second year in a row. The race will be held Sunday, Sept. 27, at University Research Park, starting at 8 a.m.

Runners can register at Heroes 6K; the race is $35 in advance and $40 on the day of the race. Students can use the coupon code, 2015STUDENTS, for 50 percent off of the registration fee. All race participants will receive a finisher’s medal, technical race shirt and post-race nutrition.

According to its website, Heroes in Recovery is a movement ignited by Foundations Recovery Network and the widespread community to eliminate the social stigma that keeps individuals with addiction and mental health issues from seeking help. The extra kilometer in the 6K symbolizes the extra effort it takes to sustain recovery, and the movement seeks to break the stigma that comes with being in recovery.

“Being in recovery is like any other illness,” UNC Charlotte’s CRC Coordinator Tracey Suggs said. “It’s real, and I think individuals in recovery suffer from that stigma.”

The CRC provides a nurturing, affirming environment in which students recovering from addictive disorders can successfully pursue academic, personal and professional goals for the purpose of enhancing their quality of life.

Last year’s race raised $2,500 for the CRC’s sustainability fund, which supports recovery support programs for students involved with the CRC, alongside outreach and educational opportunities to all UNC Charlotte students.

The Foundations Recovery Network works to provide treatment for co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders through clinical services, education and research.
