School supplies drive under way

Monday, August 10, 2015

UNC Charlotte is joining University City Connect for its inaugural school supplies donation drive to benefit the schools that comprise Governor’s Village.

From Monday, Aug. 10, through Friday, Aug. 21, faculty, staff and students are encouraged to donate school items for students in the four Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools that make up Governor’s Village: John M. Morehead STEM Academy, Nathaniel Alexander Elementary, James Martin Middle and Zebulon B. Vance High. These schools are located less than five miles from the University.

Collection bins will be in Atkins Library, Auxiliary Services Building, Cato Hall, EPIC, Facilities Management Building, Foundation Building and Reese Building. Requested items are pencils, pens, erasers, ruled (loose-leaf) paper and pocket folders; however, all school supplies are appreciated and welcomed.

Within CMS, 54 percent of students live in poverty, and according to research, that figure is higher in three of the four Governor’s Village schools. Organizers noted supplies collected during this drive will help to provide students the necessary tools to succeed in and outside the classroom.

University City Connect is a relatively new partnership among several U-City businesses and organizations to support Governor’s Village schools; partners include UNC Charlotte, TIAA-CREF, Wells Fargo and Elevation Church.
