The N.C. Department of Labor recently recognized UNC Charlotte with its Gold Award for providing a safe and healthy workplace, as well as a 2 Million Hour Award for consecutive hours worked without lost time due to employee injury.
Campus safety is a shared responsibility across the University, and these honors underscore our commitment to fostering a culture of safety at UNC Charlotte, said Darius Griffin, director of the Environmental Health and Safety Office; he and Angela Allen, workers’ compensation administrator, accepted the awards on behalf of the University.
The N.C. Labor Department has recognized public and private organizations through its annual safety awards program since 1946. According to the department, the program is “designed to stimulate interest in accident prevention and to promote safety in the workplace by providing an incentive to employers and employees to maintain a safe and healthful workplace.”
In 2013, UNC Charlotte earned a Silver Award from the N.C. Department of Labor.
The Environmental Health and Safety Office provides consultative and support services to ensure regulatory safety compliance and to maintain a safe work environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors.
