May is Internal Audit Awareness Month

Friday, May 1, 2015

Internal auditing is an important aspect of organizational governance, internal control and effective risk management at virtually any enterprise. Each May, the Institute of Internal Auditors promotes the profession of internal auditing. Professionals in the field of auditing work to raise awareness of internal auditing and its value, not only in May but throughout the year.

Tom York, director of internal audit for the University, stated the role of internal auditors is misperceived with audit professionals viewed as fault-finders, blame-layers or bureaucrats.

“Within the UNC Charlotte Department of Internal Audit, one of our guiding principles is ‘Teach + Train = Change,’” said York. “We look for opportunities to teach and train our fellow employees in every engagement that we undertake with them.”

The Internal Audit Department, in an emerging role, will enter a partnership with the University Compliance Office and the Risk Management Department to synchronize messages and activities across campus.

“Each unit has a similar, but slightly different charter and mandate. Without synchronization and integration, we could easily overwhelm the campus with audits, inspections, findings, reports and responses that get in the way rather than help with the task,” York stated.

He added that during the 2015-16 fiscal year, the three groups will work to develop common terminology and an integrated risk assessment process and integrated action plan that illustrates how risks across campus are assessed and managed.

Inside UNC Charlotte, during May, will publish a series of short articles on topics to help the campus better understand the role of internal audit.

“We want our colleagues to better understand our role and mission and encourage their engagement with us whenever they believe they need help. Our website has a wealth of information, and employees are welcome to drop into our offices in Cato Hall,” said York.
