Anne Cooper Moore has been named dean of the J. Murrey Atkins Library, beginning June 8. Moore will join UNC Charlotte from Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) where she has served as dean of library affairs since 2012. She has 27 years of experience as a leader in academic libraries.

“Dr. Moore impressed us with her successful history of guiding academic libraries,” said Joan Lorden, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. “We are confident in her ability to continue the innovative work of J. Murrey Atkins Library and to collaborate across campus to enrich the teaching, research and service missions of the University.”

At Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Moore has been responsible for the vision and leadership of the Morris Library (a member of the Association of Research Libraries), the SIU Press, the Special Collections Research Center and the Center for Dewey Studies. She has been engaged in curricular reform and co-curricular assessment and was responsible for the planning and implementation of large-scale renovations to create an academic support center and incorporate collaborative spaces in the library.

Prior to SIUC, Moore held a series of increasingly responsible posts in university libraries including dean of libraries at the University of South Dakota; associate director for user services and head of reference services at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; and branch librarian and electronic resources librarian at New Mexico State University.

Moore earned a Ph.D. in Educational Management and Development from New Mexico State University, an M.L.I.S. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and English from Duke University. Her current research agenda focuses on assessment of co-curricular services, student use of academic library spaces and the staffing and organizational structure of libraries.

Moore stated she is looking forward to joining UNC Charlotte’s bustling J. Murrey Atkins Library where she will have the opportunity to work with an innovative faculty and staff to build on current dynamic and creative initiatives.
