J. Scott Derrick, executive director of the Student Union and Cone University Center, is president-elect for the Association of College Unions International (ACUI); he will be installed formally in April at the organization’s annual conference in San Antonio, Texas.
“I am both honored and humbled to have been elected by my fellow ACUI colleagues as president-elect,” said Derrick. “To be trusted with this responsibility is something that I take very seriously.”
Following a one-year term as president-elect of ACUI, Derrick will take over as the association’s president in March 2016.
ACUI’s membership consists of students and administrators whose mission is to build campus community. The association supports this mission through education, advocacy and the delivery of services. Founded in 1914, ACUI is currently celebrating its 100th anniversary.
As president-elect, Derrick will work to advance the association’s core purpose and values and provide leadership and strategic planning.
Derrick joined UNC Charlotte in July 2014. Since then, he said he has made building relationships with individuals and departments at UNC Charlotte a personal goal, as he believes interpersonal ties are an impetus to growth.
As executive director of the Student Union and Cone University Center, Derrick is responsible for the budget and financial management, personnel and human resources, space allocation and management, strategic planning and overall organizational development of four separate departments: Student Union; Cone University Center; Conferences, Reservations and Event Services (CRES); and Niner Tech Computer Store.
A graduate of Furman University, Derrick completed a Master of Education from the University of South Carolina. Before coming to Charlotte, he served as the director of the Trone Student Center at Furman University for 15 years, where he was responsible for the Student Center operations and its student organizations.
“I look forward to working with others at the University to determine where the University sees itself in future and then deciding which steps are needed to get there,” said Derrick.
