Editor’s note: North Carolina’s 2024 primary election, including the presidential preference primary, is Tuesday, March 5. During this election, voters choose which candidates should be the party nominees to appear on the general election ballot in November. The information in this special issue of Niner Insider is intended to help prepare you to vote in the primary.
Meet Mariah Manley
Mariah Manley is a sophomore Honors College student who is majoring in health systems management with Spanish and public health minors. She also serves as the civic engagement coordinator for the 49er Democracy Experience.
What is the 49er Democracy Experience?
The 49er Democracy Experience offers the UNC Charlotte community a dynamic, nonpartisan platform for learning about and engaging in civic life. Through the 49er Democracy Experience, expert faculty, civic-minded students and community partners come together to deliver educational programming and participate in activities that enhance public understanding of and participation in the democratic process.

Do I need an ID to vote?
Yes! You now need a photo ID to vote.
How do I know if I am registered to vote?
Check your registration status by entering your information into the voter lookup tool.
What if I am not registered to vote?
You can register to vote during the early voting period the same day you cast your ballot through a process called “same-day registration.” You’ll need to attest to your eligibility and provide proof of where you live.
Who Can Vote in the Primary?
Voters affiliated with any political party may vote the ballot of candidates for their party only. Unaffiliated voters can vote in either the Democratic or Republican primary.
Where can I go to vote on Tuesday, March 5?
On Election Day, you must vote in your designated polling location. Find your Election Day polling place by entering your information into the voter search, or search using your address with the Election Day polling place search.
Who is on the ballot?
In 2024, there will be many offices up for election including federal offices, state offices and some local offices. See who is on your sample ballot by using the voter search tool through the North Carolina State Board of Elections.
Can I use my leave to go vote?
Employees are not permitted to use work time for voting. Most employees will be able to vote outside of their normal working hours using either early voting or extended hours as offered by many polling stations on Election Day. Employees may also request the use of compensatory time, bonus or vacation (if available) leave to vote. Supervisors and managers are encouraged to allow employees flexibility in reaching the polls.
Employees who are working inside a polling facility in a non-partisan, unpaid role, such as assisting voters with the voting process, may use Community Service Leave. However, employees may not use community service leave to vote, for paid activities, or to distribute information on a particular candidate or issue.
