UNC Charlotte has undergone a dynamic transformation to become this region’s research powerhouse. With nearly 30,000 students and counting, UNC Charlotte’s trajectory is skyrocketing. We currently have the second-largest undergrad population in the entire 17-campus UNC System (right behind NC State) and third-largest total student enrollment (only about 300 shy of surpassing Chapel Hill).
Here are some highlights as we begin the 2018-19 academic year:
- 29,710 total student enrollment with 24,387 undergrads and 5,323 master’s and doctoral students
- 164 degrees, including 75 bachelor’s, 65 master’s and 24 doctoral programs
- 77,890 alumni in the Charlotte region, with 135,853 alumni worldwide
- Students representing 91 countries
- $50.7 million in research funding awarded in 2017-18, through 424 research grants
- 28 patents issued in 2017, an all-time record
- 1,167 faculty and 40+ endowed professorships
- 18 NCAA Division I sports
- Prestigious civic recognition awards from the Washington Center and the Carnegie Foundation
- More than 400 student organizations, including Greek life
- 40 percent of undergraduates are first-generation college students
In addition, UNC Charlotte has been building research capacity to address the industry needs of the Charlotte region including:
- Data analytics and cybersecurity across all industry sectors, especially Charlotte’s financial companies
- Advanced manufacturing and precision metrology, two internationally recognized programs
- Energy production and infrastructure including the electricity supply chain
- Health and life sciences, bioinformatics, and biomedical engineering and sciences
- Motorsports engineering and motorsports research
