1. Bucks for a Beard

49ers Athletics Director Mike Hill didn’t pack a razor on his summer honeymoon. After a tweet suggested he looked like mascot Norm the Niner, Hill’s new wife, Jessica James-Hill, responded with a challenge. So far, more than 60 fans have donated more than $3,800 to the UNC Charlotte Athletic Foundation.

2. Furry Roomies

A new program will allow students to live in campus housing with their cats and dogs. The program is part of the University's newly launched “pets in residence halls” pilot.

Weird Recycling Center

3. Get Weird

It’s been dubbed “The Weird Recycling Center,” and it’s creating a buzz on campus. Located in the Popp Martin Student Union, the funky recycling station allows the campus community to recycle some unique items. Funded by the Charlotte Green Initiative, the Weird Recycling Center accepts items such as plastic bags, cords, cables, batteries and ink cartridges.

4. Camp4Heroes

Serving veterans with his music is nothing new to alum John Woodall. While he was a student at UNC Charlotte, his band, Brother Gravity, performed for sailors aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. Now, he is the artistic director for Camp4Heroes, a new nonprofit organization that serves wounded veterans and first responders.

5. Motorsports Scholarship

Nicholas Dove of Elizabethtown, North Carolina, is the recipient of the University’s 2018 Alan Kulwicki Memorial Scholarship for Motorsports Engineering. Kulwicki was the 1992 Winston Cup series champion. An engineer himself, Kulwicki was a strong supporter of science in general and engineering in particular.
