Construction Report

Almost midway through the spring semester, the UNC Charlotte campus continues to evolve with several exciting construction projects and renovations in the works.

New science building construction

Science Building

Site preparation is proceeding on the new $101 million science building. Demolition of existing buildings on the site is complete, and underground utilities and soil removal is underway. The science building will serve the University’s need for updated laboratories for science education. The facility will include STEM interdisciplinary instructional and research spaces, with research, office and work spaces for chemistry, biology and physics.

Estimated Completion: Spring 2021

Admissions and Visitors Center - February 2019

Admissions and Visitors Center

Work is progressing on the new Admissions and Visitors Center. The exterior masonry is almost complete, and interior work has started. The Admissions and Visitors Center will house the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and will welcome prospective students and their families to campus. Current facilities are inadequate to accommodate the University’s projected increase in prospective students. This new 18,000-square-foot building is located in South Village near the main campus entrance.

Estimated Completion: Spring 2019

CRI/Institute Circle Entrance - February 2019

Charlotte Research Institute (CRI) Entrance Improvements

The Charlotte Research Institute entrance improvements also continued, with masonry work and the installment of the UNC Charlotte illuminated sign. The project will enhance the current CRI campus entrance along North Tryon Street to aesthetically match the University’s main entrance off Highway 49. The project includes seat walls, new landscaping and an illuminated sign in the median.

Estimated Completion: Spring 2019

University Recreation Center - February 2019

University Recreation Center

The roof of the new University Recreation Center is nearing completion, and interior drywall is being installed. This 160,000-square-foot recreation facility will provide much-needed health and wellness space for the University. The final product will include aerobic and weight training rooms, group fitness spaces, multipurpose courts, recreational aquatic facilities, locker rooms, common areas and offices.
