Mark West, a professor of English in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, is one of five finalists for the 2013 Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence – UNC Charlotte’s top teaching honor. This year’s recipient will be named at a Sept. 20 reception; Inside UNC Charlotte is featuring each finalist in alphabetical order before the event.
Earlier this semester, a new marketing effort to encourage Niners to “Share the Air” began; it is designed to promote smoking in designated areas across campus, as well as tobacco cessation programs available to students, faculty and staff members.
Distinguished guest artists Francisco Ruvalcaba of the José Limón Dance Company and Lloyd Knight and Lorenzo Pagano of the Martha Graham Dance Company will be among the performers at the annual Department of Dance Faculty Concert scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27-28. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts Belk Theater.
Commencement speakers and bell ringers are needed for UNC Charlotte’s winter commencement, which is Saturday, Dec. 14, in Halton Arena, located in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center. Faculty and staff are requested to encourage students graduating in December to apply for one of these positions. One speaker and bell ringer will be selected for each ceremony.
On Friday, Oct. 4, UNC Charlotte’s Extended Academic Programs Office will hold its second annual Learning and Development Summit: Leading a Learning Organization. The event is set for 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Cone University Center, Lucas Room.
Andrew Claster, who served as deputy chief analytics officer for the 2012 Obama campaign, will discuss “The Analytics Effect” at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 17 at UNC Center City. His talk, part of the Belk College of Business NEXT speaker series, will be streamed live on Inside UNC Charlotte.
UNC Charlotte’s inaugural football season is underway, and 49er spirit is at an all-time high. Catch green-and-white fever with the Homecoming celebration planned in conjunction with the Oct. 12 game against UNC Pembroke.
The Charlotte 49ers suffered their first loss of the season, 40-13, to North Carolina Central, Saturday at Jerry Richardson Stadium.
The loss snaps the 49ers season-opening two-game win streak and came in the final game of a three-game home stand in front of a standing room only crowd of 16,630.
