HR learning and development wins regional award

Wednesday, April 16, 2014

The learning and development team in the University’s Human Resources Department recently received the Excellence in Human Resources Practices Award presented at the Southern regional meeting of the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR).

The team, which is comprised of Joanna Roop, employee learning and development manager, and learning and development specialists Kathy Hurst and Jules Keith-Le, were recognized for “The Leadership Experience,” a recent HR offering designed to enhance leadership skills; participants must be LEAD-certified employees who supervise at least one person.

A 56-hour program in seven sessions, the Leadership Experience focuses on participants’ role as a leader within the University. It helps build competencies in coaching/delegation, staff development, strategic leadership and change management. The inaugural cohort of the Leadership Experience graduated in December 2013.

According to CUPA-HR, the Excellence in Human Resources Practices Award honors “achievements of college and university human resource professionals or teams at member institutions to improve the quality of program and services on their own campuses through effective HR practices.”

HR’s Roop noted, “The focus of the learning and development team has been very strategic and intentional. This is in terms of developing a leadership program that not only supports the University’s strategic goals, but one that  helps mid-level managers build upon their  strengths and apply classroom learning to the job. I am extremely proud of the achievement of our team and excited about what is yet to come.”
