Wake Forest University professor and MSNBC television host Melissa Harris-Perry will discuss “Mommy, Mammy and the Maid: Race, Class and Women’s Political Power” for UNC Charlotte’s ninth annual Women’s and Gender Studies Speaker Series at 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 1, in the Student Union, Room 340.

UNC Charlotte is committed to becoming a regional model of sustainable stewardship, and toward that goal, the University recently earned two Clean Fuel Advanced Technology Project grants totaling $64,000. 

Inside UNC Charlotte, the online campus news/information resource for UNC Charlotte employees, is getting a new look, and the redesigned site launches Friday, Jan. 30. It was a collaborative effort by units within University communications, based upon feedback and suggestions from users across campus.

Chancellor Philip L. Dubois is the 2014-15 recipient of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District III Inclusion and Diversity Leadership Award, which recognizes an individual for his/her efforts to foster inclusion and diversity within the higher education profession, on his/her campus or in the greater community.

Rapidly increasing demand and several years of budget cuts are the key factors in a proposal to raise UNC Charlotte tuition for the next two fiscal years.

University City Partners, UNC Charlotte and Mecklenburg’s parks department have launched a partnership that may lead to innovative new parks both here and across the county. Graduate urban design students also will benefit as they take on the challenge of adding recreational space to an already living, vibrant community, said José Gámez, associate professor of architecture and urban design.

The University City area continues to grow with new apartments and retail centers, and UNC Charlotte, along with the city, is making plans to accommodate alternative ways to get around.

Bojan Cukic, professor and chair of the Department of Computer Science, will discuss biometrics and privacy in the digital age as the fourth speaker in the 2015 Great Decisions lecture series.  This free, public presentation is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 4, at UNC Charlotte Center City.

The Charlotte Venture Challenge, the Southeast’s premiere business innovation competition, will take place in partnership with the Southeast Venture Conference, which returns to Charlotte Tuesday, March 31, through Thursday, April 2.

The Advisory Committee to the Chancellor for Employee Health and Wellness is offering the webinar “Staying Connected: Keeping the Spark Alive in Your Marriage.” It is scheduled for noon, Tuesday, Feb. 24.

The Advisory Committee to the Chancellor for Employee Health and Wellness, as part of its mission, develops programs to emphasize healthy behaviors among University faculty and staff members. New for 2015 is the “ACCEHW Wellness Points System.”
