Senior nursing major Devin Yates first joined the U.S. Army in 2004. While serving in Afghanistan in 2012, he sustained multiple gunshot wounds and a severe traumatic brain injury.
“Being a patient was the hardest thing I've ever been through,” Yates recalled. “The dedication of the nurses and health care providers on my team made me realize I could use my experience as a patient to help future patients.”
For Yates, UNC Charlotte provided the perfect opportunity to fuel his new passion while providing support as a veteran.
“I ended up at UNC Charlotte because it has a fantastic nursing program as well as a willingness to work with veterans,” said Yates. “My overall experience has been outstanding. I would encourage anyone to come here, not just because I'm a student, but because of my experiences, especially non-traditional students and those with a military background.”
