It’s hard to believe five years have passed since the first UNC Charlotte Science Festival. Not only has the festival itself grown, so has its popularity. Part of the broader N.C. Science Festival, the annual UNC Charlotte’s Science and Technology Expo has attracted thousands of visitors for STEM-related demonstrations, workshops and speakers.
The 2017 UNC Charlotte Expo, scheduled for Sunday, April 23, is the festival’s grand finale, closing out a slew of youth-friendly events. Beginning at noon and running until 4 p.m., “kids” of all ages will be entertained with activities including robotics, rocketry, virtual people, live animals, explosive chemistry, lab experiments, exotic plants, racecars, boats and drones. As always, Tom “Dr. Boom” Schmedake will host the “Combustion Chemistry Show.”

A dream for the science-curious, the Expo features more than 100 hands-on activities and presentations in chemistry, physics, geology, computer science, engineering and biology, all developed by University science and technology departments. But it’s not just the University that will be on display.
Among this year’s partnering organizations are STEM-oriented institutions such as Discovery Place, the N.C. Zoo, Great Outdoors University (N.C. Wildlife Federation), Makerspace Charlotte, Clean Air Carolina and First Tech Challenge Robotics. Even NoDa Brewing Company will be on hand demonstrating the complex science being craft beer. Sorry, no beer will be served…
