Founders Celebration

Since its founding 71 years ago, UNC Charlotte’s transformation into a vibrant research university has been exponential. Established as the Charlotte Center on Sept. 23, 1946 as a night school serving primarily World War II veterans. Enrollment was just 278 students.

The Charlotte Center grew into Charlotte College and in 1965 became UNC Charlotte, the fourth campus of the UNC system. Today, UNC Charlotte is the state’s premier urban research university with student enrollment topping 29,000, an all-time record.
