Orange construction cones have become a familiar site on the ever-evolving UNC Charlotte campus. While the Blue Line Extension has officially opened, there are still several eagerly anticipated projects and renovations in the works. Get all the details below.
Belk Plaza Renovation
Belk Plaza, located in the historic core of campus, is the center of University life. The site will be revitalized into a plaza for campus use.
Designs for the plaza incorporated input from the campus community and alumni. It will include outdoor seating, lawn space, a water feature, tables and a performance area. Landscaping plans will focus on improved pedestrian and bike traffic patterns.
Estimated competition: Summer 2018
Admissions and Visitors Center
Located near South Village by the main entrance at Dickson Gate, the Admissions and Visitors Center will be a hub for visiting and prospective students. It will serve as an information center and starting point for campus tours and student orientation. Earthwork is just beginning, and footing will be installed in the coming weeks.
Estimated completion: March 2019
University Recreation Center
The University Recreation Center will provide students with physical health and wellness opportunities at this 160,000-square-foot facility. The center will include aerobic and weight training rooms, group fitness spaces, multipurpose courts, aquatic facilities, locker rooms, student meeting venues and space for intramural sports and other recreational programs. Retaining walls are now complete and structural steel placement is underway.
Estimated completion: July 2019
Student Union Deck Expansion
The expansion of the Union Deck will provide 600 to 700 additional parking spaces to make up for the loss of Parking Lot 19, which became the site for the University Recreation Center. Construction continues as concrete is poured to create the fifth level of the structure. Work has begun on electrical and sprinkler rough-ins and brick.
Estimated completion: Summer 2018
