Board of Governors Visits University for First Time Since 1972

Members of the UNC system’s governing board now have experienced the UNC Charlotte campus firsthand. The UNC Board of Governors held its two-day February meeting and the University, and members took an interactive tour of campus and met dozens of students, faculty members, and community and University leaders.

UNC Charlotte was pleased to host the board and even more proud to display its progress since the last board visit in 1972.

Typically, the Board of Governors holds its meetings in Chapel Hill. The board is a policy-making body charged with supervision, management, and governance of the University of North Carolina. Its 32 voting members are elected by the North Carolina General Assembly for four-year terms.

The UNC Board of Governors unanimously adopted a resolution honoring UNC Charlotte on the 50th anniversary of legislation to establish the University as a constituent campus of the UNC system.

Longtime supporter Irwin Belk was a state senator in 1965 when he introduced the legislation that would make UNC Charlotte the fourth institution in the consolidated University of North Carolina system. He orchestrated a coalition and convinced 49 out of 50 senators to sponsor the bill that transformed Charlotte College into the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
