The N.C. General Assembly convened in January for the two-year legislative session. UNC Charlotte has an aggressive legislative agenda that reflects the challenges of the campus’ fast rate of growth, the demand for classes in STEM majors and expanding efficiencies that encourage management flexibility. 2015 Legislative Priorities
- $18 million for enrollment growth to meet high student demand
- UNC Charlotte‘s growth represents 46 percent of the total UNC system growth during the past six years. Fall 2014 enrollment grew to 27,237, up 31 percent in 10 years.
- $12.6 million for planning funds for a new Science Building
- 142% enrollment growth since opening of the current building. 50% of all students with declared majors are in science, math and engineering fields.
- $2 million for Data Science and Business Analytics (Big Data) program
- Building on the state’s 2014 investment in game-changing research, this industry-led initiative is designed to meet the talent demand, professional training and research needs in retail, healthcare, finance, technology and energy sectors.
- Management flexibility and efficiencies
- Delegate to the UNC Board of Governors increased approval authority from $300,000 to $1 million and to increase carry-forward authority to eliminate current incentive of “use it or lose it”.
- Salary increases
- Employees have received two nominal raises in the past six years. More than 700 UNC Charlotte employees earn less than $35,000.
