Four-part series 'Forty IXers: Know Your Title IX' scheduled

Monday, October 20, 2014

UNC Charlotte’s Title IX Office, the Center for Wellness Promotion and Dean of Students Office, in conjunction with the Feminist Union, will present the four-part series “Forty IX'ers: Know Your Title IX.” The series will offer panel discussions, resources and additional learning opportunities related to Title IX and the Violence Against Women Act (also called Campus SaVE).

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Education released a list of public universities with open sexual violence investigations and alleged violations of Title IX, a federal civil right that prohibits sex discrimination in education. UNC Charlotte leaders have committed to programming related to education, awareness and prevention of sexual assault, relationship violence and stalking.

Dawn Floyd, Title IX coordinator, and Nicole Madonna-Rosario, a full-time interpersonal violence prevention specialist, along with the Office of Student Conduct, are working to ensure students are aware of their rights, as well as the University’s responsibilities in handling incidents of sexual assault, stalking and relationship violence. They also are providing campus and community resources available to those involved in these incidents.

According to Floyd, “We are hoping these programs are not only informative but will also provide students with an opportunity to ask questions about UNC Charlotte’s processes and resources and an opportunity to discuss their concerns about these issues on our campus."

“Forty IX'ers: Know Your Title IX” is comprised of four programs; each will begin at 6:30 p.m. They are:

  • The BasIX: Learn about Title IX at UNC Charlotte” on Monday, Oct. 27, in the Student Union, Room 340AB. This program will provide a summary of applicable laws, what the laws mean for students, how and where to report a complaint of sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence or stalking, confidential vs. non-confidential resources and how complaints are handled at the University.  The event will include a student-moderated panel discussion with Floyd, Madonna-Rosario and a member of the Office of Student Conduct.
  • “The DynamIX: Create an Informed Campus Culture” on Monday, Nov. 3, in Cone University Center, Room 210. This program will debunk rape myths in the form of a game and talk about rape culture including bias and victim-blaming.
  • “The SpecifIX: How to Get Help” on Monday, Nov.10, in the Student Union, Room 340ABC . This program includes representatives from organizations that are both on- and off-campus that provide resources for survivors of sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence and stalking.  Resources such as the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, Safe Alliance and local hospital staff (SANE nurse) will be among those represented.
  • “The TopIX: Understand Your University Environment” on Monday, Nov. 17, in the Student Union, Room 340CF.  Panelists for this town hall-style meeting will include University administrators who will discuss UNC Charlotte's efforts to educate students about and to prevent sexual assault.

Programs are open to students, faculty, staff and the community.  Light refreshments will be provided.
