Campus community encouraged to support School Tools Campaign

Wednesday, July 24, 2013

UNC Charlotte is joining with Classroom Central, Communities in Schools and WSOC-TV for the 17th annual School Tools Campaign.

School Tools is a drive to collect and distribute school supplies to children who need them. All supplies collected will be distributed through Classroom Central, a free store for teachers and Communities in Schools site coordinators.

The University’s campaign will be Thursday, Aug. 1, through Friday Aug. 16. Donation sites will focus on the collection of the following items: pens, pencils, erasers, colored pencils, glue sticks, markers, notebook paper and pocket folders; however, all school supplies will be accepted.

Collection bins will be in Atkins Library, Auxiliary Services Building, Barnhardt Student Activity Center, Cato Hall, College of Education, Duke Centennial Hall, EPIC, Friday Building, Facilities Management/PPS Building, Foundation Building, Grigg Hall, Reese Building, Student Union and UNC Charlotte Center City.

According to Tanisha Poole, business operations coordinator for Classroom Central, 54 percent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) students live in poverty. The School Tools campaign will provide students and teachers the necessary tools to succeed in and out of the classroom.

”Items we may take for granted, such as pens and paper, are very limited at several schools,” said Poole.

Monetary donations can be given online. Faculty and staff members who choose to donate online should fill out the form completely to track UNC Charlotte’s participation. Select “School Tools” in the dropdown menu when asked where the donation should be designated.
