The Departments of Theatre and Music are serving local high schools this spring with traveling productions that bring classic works directly to the students; the shows also will be performed on campus.

The Girls Scout, Hornets’ Nest Council recently named Regina Guyer among its Women of Distinction in the area of environmental leadership. According to the organization, the award recognizes an individual who has made significant accomplishments in keeping with the Girl Scouts’ movement “to leave a place better than they found it” and to use resources wisely.

Oscar de la Torre, an assistant professor in the Department of Africana Studies, received a 2014 College Educators Research Fellowship from the UNC-Duke Consortium in Latin American and Caribbean Studies.

Dedicated May 6, 2004, Cato Hall is often the first point of contact for prospective students interested in enrolling at the state’s urban research institution. Named for Wayland H. Cato Jr., the building houses the Undergraduate Admissions Office, the Graduate School and the Chancellor’s Office, as well as internal audit and legal affairs.

Brittany Davis, a marketing assistant and graphic designer for the Student Union, Activities and Recreation Department, was recognized at the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) conference held earlier this month.

Three College of Liberal Arts & Sciences faculty members will be honored for teaching excellence, during an awards event at 2:30 p.m., Monday, April 28, in Cone University Center, Room 210. The award winners are:

Sanjaya Mayadunne, a doctoral student in computing and information systems (business information systems and operations management track), will defend “Competitive Store Closing During an Economic Downturn: A Mathematical Programming Approach” at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, May 1, in the Friday Building, Room 381. Cem Saydam and Monica Johar are the dissertation advisors.

Eleven faculty members whose combined service to the University totaled more than 240 years were honored at an annual event Thursday, April 17, at the Harris Alumni Center and Johnson Glen. They will enter the ranks of retired faculty at the end of the spring semester.

Members of the Governors Association of Korea recently visited UNC Charlotte’s Energy Production and Infrastructure Center as part of a tour of the Southeastern United States. The group learned more about energy collaboration at the city and state levels.

Kyle White, a UNC Charlotte alumnus, will be awarded the Medal of Honor during a White House ceremony on May 13. He will be the seventh living recipient to be awarded the medal for service in Afghanistan or Iraq.
