The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has reaffirmed UNC Charlotte’s community engagement classification, which the University earned originally in 2008.

Charlotte 49ers head men’s basketball coach Alan Major will be taking an indefinite medical leave of absence, effective immediately. Major, who took a similar medical leave during the summer, approached Director of Athletics Judy Rose to request the leave due to a return of health conditions.

National Urban League president Marc Morial will give the keynote speech for the University’s celebration of the life, work and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 20, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.  

Tina Dadio’s mantra for all University employees is “when in doubt contact the Office of Legal Affairs.” Dadio is the University public records officer and a paralegal, and during her five years on campus, she’s experienced a different work environment from that of being a paralegal in the for-profit world.

Murray Webster, professor of sociology, is the 2015 winner of the Cooley-Mead Award from the American Sociological Association’s Social Psychology Section.

For the 2014 calendar year, authors in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences researched, wrote or edited 32 books on an array of topics including primates of Vietnam, trends in drug use and distribution, Hispanic children’s literature, middle class white anti-racism, stalled peacemaking in Israel and Palestine, the meltdown of the middle class, the U.S.

The relocation of the Charlotte regional office of the Small Business and Technology Development Center to the UNC Charlotte PORTAL Building concentrates University-affiliated entrepreneurial support services in a state-of-the-art facility. Formerly located in the Ben Craig Center at University Research Park, the SBTDC officially opened in PORTAL Jan. 2.

JuliAnna Ávila, assistant professor of English, is the co-recipient of the prestigious Edward Fry Book Award for “Critical Digital Literacies as Social Praxis: Intersections and Challenges.”

The Projective Eye Gallery at UNC Charlotte Center City opens “Pulse Dome Project: Art & Design of Don ZanFagna” on Friday, Jan. 9, with a reception, lecture and performance.

UNC Charlotte students, faculty and staff members have stepped up to help save lives by participating in the “49ers 4 Life” blood drive. The sixth annual drive will be from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 20, at the Barnhardt Student Activity Center; organizers have set a goal of 950 pints.

Vivian Lord, professor of criminal justice and criminology and director of the Mediation Program, will discuss "Suicide by Cop: Practical Direction for Recognition, Resolution and Recovery" as part of the UNC Charlotte Alumni Association’s "Nuggets of Knowledge" series. Lord will share information about real-world tactics that have successfully resolved "suicide-by-cop" situations.

The University Career Center will hold its annual Mock Interview Day on Friday, Jan. 30, in the Cone University Center, Lucas Room.  A popular event, Mock Interview Day brings experienced professionals from the Charlotte business community onto campus to work with students and alumni to improve their interviewing skills.
