UNC Charlotte students, faculty and staff members have stepped up to help save lives by participating in the “49ers 4 Life” blood drive. The sixth annual drive will be from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 20, at the Barnhardt Student Activity Center; organizers have set a goal of 950 pints.
Vivian Lord, professor of criminal justice and criminology and director of the Mediation Program, will discuss "Suicide by Cop: Practical Direction for Recognition, Resolution and Recovery" as part of the UNC Charlotte Alumni Association’s "Nuggets of Knowledge" series. Lord will share information about real-world tactics that have successfully resolved "suicide-by-cop" situations.
The University Career Center will hold its annual Mock Interview Day on Friday, Jan. 30, in the Cone University Center, Lucas Room. A popular event, Mock Interview Day brings experienced professionals from the Charlotte business community onto campus to work with students and alumni to improve their interviewing skills.
President Abraham Lincoln’s Jan. 1, 1863, Emancipation Proclamation set in motion the abolition of African American slavery, a move he later described metaphorically as a “king’s cure” for America’s “evils.” Lincoln’s emancipation edict also authorized the mobilization of African Americans to serve in the federal armies to suppress the Confederates’ insurrection.
The planned "Live Wire" for Jan. 8 has been canceled; there will be a rebroadcast of a program featuring Ted Amato, professor of economics, and student Brittany Nunn discussing the imapact of the Business Honors Program and Justin Webb and student Luzina Holden discussing business innovation and entrepreneurship at UNC Charlotte.
UNC Charlotte Magazine recently received a 2014 Gold MarCom Award in the category of educational publications.
SPARK Publications, the creative firm that designs the magazine, nominated the second quarter edition of the UNC Charlotte Magazine for the honor.
UNC Charlotte administrative offices will be closed Wednesday, Dec. 24, through Thursday, Jan. 1, for winter break. The University will resume normal operations Friday, Jan. 2, 2015.

Erik Saule, assistant professor of computer science in the College of Computing and Informatics, has been named a National Consortium for Data Science Fellow for 2015.
The National Consortium for Data Science (NCDS) is a public-private partnership to advance data science and address the challenges and opportunities of big data; Saule was one of three NCDS Data Fellows for 2015.
Akin Ogundiran, chair of the Africana Studies Department, is the co-editor of the recent work “Materialities of Ritual in the Black Atlantic,” published by Indiana University Press.
