9,004 to receive degrees during virtual Commencement
Thursday, January 7, 2021

NiNiner Nation will celebrate more than 9,000 degrees and graduate certificates during a virtual commencement ceremony on Friday, Jan. 8. . The pre-show will start at 5:49 p.m. with video messages from graduates’ families, and the ceremony will start at 6 p.m. Both can be viewed at commencement.uncc.edu/.

The main ceremony will include greetings from Chancellor Sharon L. Gaber, representatives from the University Board of Trustees and UNC Board of Governors, student commencement speakers and traditional elements such as the singing of the alma mater, ringing of the bell, conferring of degrees and turning of tassels. The ceremony will last approximately 45 minutes.

Following the ceremony, graduates are encouraged to select their college to listen to greetings from their dean. Graduates can then click on their specific department or degree to hear their name called, similar to the announcement of names at in-person ceremonies.

“Commencement, whether held in-person or virtually, is one of our most cherished traditions, one that marks a major milestone for you, as we celebrate the culmination of your transformative journey at UNC Charlotte,” said Chancellor Gaber. “You have all persevered to accomplish your dream of a college education and you all deserve respect and recognition.”

During the virtual commencement exercises for the May, August and December 2020 graduates, 6,522 bachelor’s, 1,771 master’s and 189 doctoral degrees will be awarded.

For those unable to participate in Friday’s ceremony, it will be posted on the commencement website following the virtual event.
