UNC Charlotte Continuing Education has received $350,000 in grant funding from the city of Charlotte to support career training and professional development scholarships for individuals affected by furloughs, layoffs, unemployment or underemployment due to COVID-19.

The Career Comeback Scholarships are available for qualified newly enrolled participants according to financial need in the following programs: Business Analysis, Business Process Management, Coding: Full Stack Web Development, Cybersecurity, Data Analytics and Visualization, Financial Technology, Human Resources, Learning and Development, Medical Coding Specialist, Paralegal and Project Management.

“As the Charlotte region climbs back from the steep downturn it took following the early days of the pandemic, many professionals are still experiencing hardship related to reentering the workforce,” said Asher Haines, director of UNC Charlotte Continuing Education. "Our mission has always been to help individuals and employers achieve their professional, personal and organizational goals by offering quality programs with practical application. We are pleased to partner with the city of Charlotte to offer the Career Comeback Scholarships to our local community.”

The Career Comeback Scholarships provide opportunities for strong career growth in a variety of in-demand fields. For example, the project management labor force is expected to grow by 33 percent through 2027; jobs as paralegals are expected to grow by 10 percent through 2029; and jobs as medical coders are expected to grow by eight percent through 2029.

"UNC Charlotte has always been a vital source for workforce development in the region, and this role is even more important during this period of economic hardship," said Emily Cantrell, talent development senior manager, city of Charlotte. "Through these scholarships, the University will be able to provide many career-ready opportunities for those who have been hit hardest by this pandemic."
