University Convocation 2020: Optimism amidst challenges
Monday, August 17, 2020

Chancellor Sharon L. Gaber pledged to lead UNC Charlotte responsibly, underscored her goal  to support and strengthen the University, and ensured a great collegiate experience for all 49ers during her first University Convocation address.

This year’s University Convocation was conducted virtually Monday, Aug. 17, against the backdrop of the global coronavirus pandemic rather than in McKnight Hall, where faculty and staff traditionally gather at the start of a new academic year. But this challenge did not dampen Chancellor Gaber’s enthusiasm for the future of UNC Charlotte.

“Even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, I want you to be encouraged. Our faculty and staff are dedicated and innovative. Our students are creative and resilient. Our University is strong and our future is bright. We will get through this together.”

Discussing the return of students and start of classes on Sept. 7, Gaber stressed the educational campaign underway, The New Norm, that outlines expectations for students, faculty and staff for keeping Niner Nation safe. She also expressed her appreciation for the many essential workers who have worked tirelessly to ensure a safe campus environment.

“We remain ever mindful of the health and well-being of our campus community,” said Gaber. “It is the responsibility of ALL of us to do everything we can to keep each other safe and healthy.”

As she looked to the coming months, Gaber noted an eagerness to hear from University stakeholders regarding UNC Charlotte’s strengths and their opinions about what differentiates the institution from other colleges and universities.

“I truly believe our best days are yet to come, and I’m honored to stand with you as a fellow Niner,” said Gaber.

University Convocation speakers included Provost Joan Lorden, Faculty Council President Joel Avrin, Staff Council Chair Celeste Corpening and Student Body President Tahlieah Sampson. Due to University Convocation’s alternative format, newly hired and promoted faculty, who traditionally are recognized during University Convocation, will be recognized at a later date.
