The Dubois era comes to a close

The Dubois era comes to a close

One day prior to the June 30 conclusion of his 15-year chancellorship at UNC Charlotte and the official start of his retirement, Philip L. Dubois received separate honors reserved for those whose service and contributions to the University and to the State of North Carolina are deemed extraordinarily remarkable.

First, the UNC Charlotte Alumni Association presented Dubois with its Honorary Alumnus Award. It is given to non-UNC Charlotte graduates who make significant contributions to the University’s educational mission, support the education of all students, possess a desire to leave a legacy at the University and serve as models to alumni, students, colleagues and community members.

“There is no one more deserving of being named an honorary UNC Charlotte alumnus than you, Chancellor Dubois,” said Krista Manns ‘95, president of the Alumni Association Board of Directors. “It is a fitting tribute to your significant contributions, your passion for continually improving UNC Charlotte and your lasting legacy to the University.”

Later in the day, Chancellor Dubois and Lisa Lewis Dubois received The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, North Carolina’s highest award for state service. Granted by Gov. Roy Cooper, it is selectively awarded to persons whose service to the state and to their communities has made a significant impact and is regarded as having strengthened North Carolina.

“Chancellor and Lisa Dubois have been recognized by a wide array of organizations, governmental bodies, professional organizations for their outstanding contributions to Charlotte, UNC Charlotte and higher education,” said Betty Doster, special assistant to the chancellor for constituent relations. “It is only fitting that on their last week in North Carolina, Gov. Roy Cooper has bestowed on them The Order of the Long Leaf Pine.”

A Legacy of Leadership

Dubois’ legacy of leadership at UNC Charlotte, which began immediately upon his July 2005 arrival, has been chronicled in detail over the past several months through The Dubois Legacy and the summer 2020 issue of UNC Charlotte magazine

“It’s been a tremendous honor to serve the University and the UNC System as UNC Charlotte’s fourth chancellor,” said Dubois. “In our hearts, Lisa and I will forever be members of Niner Nation. We look forward to the University’s continued growth and future success.”
