UNC Charlotte celebrated the Class of 2020 in style, albeit not in the traditional way. More than 200 graduates and members of families, faculty and staff who responded to an invitation to submit videos expressing favorite memories, pride in accomplishment and well wishes for the future were featured in a special social media presentation titled, “To the Class of 2020 — A Virtual Celebration.” The hour-long program aired on Saturday, May 9, during the time that nearly 5,000 49ers were scheduled to receive bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.
While the COVID-19 pandemic prompted a University decision to postpone in-person commencement ceremonies in Halton Arena, it didn’t stop the University community from acknowledging and commemorating this year's spring graduates. On Friday, May 8, Chancellor Philip L. Dubois sent congratulatory emails to the Class of 2020 with links to his virtual commencement address, along with links to the student speakers’ virtual addresses and an online edition of the Class of 2020 commemorative commencement program. Also, a printed copy of the program is being mailed to graduates.
The UNC Charlotte Alumni Association is sending welcome packets to the undergraduates, welcoming them as the newest members of the alumni network. The Association has created a web hub for the Class of 2020 with links to helpful resources such as career services, ordering a class ring, claiming an alumni email address and joining an alumni network. UNC Charlotte graduates transition automatically to become lifetime members of the UNC Charlotte Alumni Association.
“We are so incredibly proud of you and all that you have accomplished during your journey at UNC Charlotte,” said Sallie Sistare, executive director of Alumni Affairs. “We already know that as 49er graduates, you will have exponential opportunities for success. We're excited to welcome you as the newest members of our 147,000+ alumni network.”
UNC Charlotte plans to reschedule on-campus commencement ceremonies for spring graduates at a later date.
