UNC Charlotte’s chancellor, Philip L. Dubois, in recognition of the University’s tremendous growth and achievement over the course of his tenure, has been named by the Charlotte Business Journal as recipient of its Most Admired CEO Lifetime Achievement Award to be presented at an event at the Westin Charlotte on March 25.

Prompting the award is the University’s unprecedented growth in enrollment, capital investment and programming between Dubois’ 2005 arrival at UNC Charlotte and his announced retirement date of June 30. While leading UNC Charlotte, Dubois oversaw record-breaking enrollment, unprecedented academic program and research growth and capital improvements that total $1.2 billion. “I am honored to receive the Charlotte Business Journal’s Most Admired CEO Lifetime Achievement Award,” said Dubois. “UNC Charlotte is a special place with outstanding faculty and staff, talented students and loyal alumni and friends. I have been very fortunate to have been supported over the years by these groups as well as a loyal and talented administrative team. This recognition is a welcome affirmation of our hard work together.”

Among the campus facilities that opened during Dubois’ chancellorship are the Energy Production and Infrastructure Center (EPIC), the Popp Martin Student Center, University Recreation Center (UREC), UNC Charlotte Center City, several residence halls and dining commons, with a $90 million science building and a hotel and conference center, both currently under construction, scheduled to open in 2021.

The CATS Light Rail Blue Line extension opened in 2018 with UNC Charlotte as an essential partner, better connecting UNC Charlotte’s main campus and UNC Charlotte Center City—and the University to both Uptown and University City. Football—along with the construction of a new stadium—arrived in 2013. Over eight years of operation, the football program has progressed, this past season earning a spot in its first-ever bowl game, and this spring sending three players to participate in the NFL combine.

The Most Admired CEOs Lifetime Achievement Award, which honors top executives in Charlotte who demonstrate admirable leadership qualities, comes on the heels of the Charlotte Business Journal including Dubois in its 2019 class of Most Admired CEOs. Nominations were open to the public and came from members of the business community.

Note: The event planned for March 25 at the Westin Charlotte has been postponed. Updated information will be provided once the event has been rescheduled.
