Cheryl Brown, chair and associate professor, Department of Political Science and Public Administration, will speak as part of the Great Decisions lecture series at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 5, at UNC Charlotte Center City.
She will discuss Susan Ariel Aaronson's article, from the Foreign Policy Association’s Great Decisions 2020 Briefing Book, “Artificial Intelligence and Data.” In her talk, Brown will discuss how “policymakers in many countries are developing plans and funding research in artificial intelligence (AI). Global [economic] growth is slowing, and not surprisingly, many policymakers hope that AI will provide a magic solution. The European Union, Brazil and other Western countries have adopted regulations that grant users greater control over their data and require that firms using AI be transparent about how they use it. Will the United States follow suit?”
Brown teaches a variety of courses for the Political Science and Public Administration Department including “Politics of China and East Asia in World Affairs.” Her research interests include China’s personal data privacy and tort reform; technology, ethics and culture; and Big Data governance and privacy. She has focused recently on the legal, social and ethical implications of deep-sea mining, one of the issues currently impacting the South China Sea.
The Office of International Programs coordinates the annual Great Decisions lecture series for the Charlotte community to discuss foreign policy issues selected as pressing by the Foreign Policy Association. The series is coordinated in collaboration with Charlotte Country Day School, International House of Charlotte and the World Affairs Council of Charlotte.
