Applications accepted for leadership development programs

No matter what the stage of their careers, all managers can benefit from enhancing and building their leadership skills. UNC Charlotte’s Learning and Organizational Development Office offers two flagship programs for that purpose.

Each year, UNC Charlotte sponsors a select number of employees for the Leadership Development Program (LDP), and every spring semester, the University offers the Leadership Experience to competitively selected, mid- to senior-level managers. Human Resources is accepting applications until Thursday, Oct. 31, for both of these programs.

The Leadership Experience, winner of the College and University Professional Association (CUPA) for Human Resources’ “Excellence in HR Practices” award, runs from Jan. 9 to May 11, 2020. This program prepares next-generation leaders to guide UNC Charlotte to meet strategic goals by solving real problems that impact the campus and community. Participants work collaboratively in small teams to apply consistent and focused efforts to understand the context, root causes and tradeoffs related to each team’s challenge. They learn about and incorporate principles of change management, team dynamics, strategic thinking, self-awareness, ethical decision making and other critical competencies.

Administered by the internationally respected Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, North Carolina, the Leadership Development Program is designed for leaders of managers and other senior professionals. This intense and challenging five-day course is built around six vital competencies for effective managers: influence, communication, thinking and acting systemically, self-awareness, resiliency and learning agility. As middle managers take that next step from managing themselves, to managing a team, to leading enterprise-wide initiatives, these essential competencies prepare them to move from the tactical to the strategic level of leadership.

“Learning and Organizational Development embraces the challenge of developing a talented and diverse workforce and is committed to the professional development and continuous improvement of the next generation of leaders,” said Alyson Ebaugh, director of Learning and Organizational Development. “I hope all senior managers consider applying to either of these programs.”
