UNC Charlotte dedicated its newest building, the Lucius G. Gage Jr. Undergraduate Admissions Center, during a campus ceremony Wednesday, Aug 14.
In addition to housing the admissions team, the Undergraduate Admissions Center, which features more than 18,000 square feet of space, includes a 150-seat auditorium and a 50-seat presentation room to accommodate prospective students and their families, as well as high school groups.
“This new state-of-the-art facility is one we can be proud of,” said Chandler Crean, student body president. “It is welcoming, it is full of caring, 49er staff members ready to guide students and families through the admissions process, and it is the place where dreams will come true for first-generation college students, like myself.”
Claire Kirby, director of admissions, stated, “The Gage Undergraduate Admissions Center triples our capacity, allowing us to run multiple tours per day during peak visit times so we can accommodate the demand for campus tours.”
Gage, a Charlotte native, studied at Duke University Medical School, followed by a residency at the University of Virginia. He returned home and practiced medicine at the Nalle Clinic in Uptown, eventually serving as director of the Allergy and Arthritis Department.
“Like Miss Bonnie, Dr. Gage believed in the importance of accessible and affordable education,” said Chancellor Philip L. Dubois. “The naming of the Undergraduate Admissions Center recognizes the generosity of Dr. Gage toward UNC Charlotte and his passion for higher education.”
Gage’s passions also included working on land he owned in Waxhaw, which he purchased to build gardens and a wildlife sanctuary. Following his death in 2011, Gage donated his 130-acre property to UNC Charlotte.
