TEDxUNCCharlotte speakers finalized, tickets to go on sale

Twelve speakers will deliver presentations at UNC Charlotte’s first-ever live TEDx event scheduled for Friday, March 22, in the Cone University Center.

The inaugural TEDxUNC Charlotte will feature live talks reflecting the wealth and knowledge of the University and  surrounding communities centered around the theme, "The Power of You Makes it Possible." It is scheduled for 12:30 to 5 p.m., with a reception afterward.

Speakers include University faculty and staff members Tracey Benson, an assistant professor of educational leadership, who will address racial bias; Karen Cox who will address a topic related to history; Leslie Dill, a health education specialist with the Center for Wellness Promotion, will talk about porn culture and sexual health; Erica Lennon, assistant director for outreach in the Price Center for Counseling and Psychological Services, who will address suicide; John Nance ’03, ’08 Ph.D., from the Counseling Department, will talk about empathy; Steven Rogelberg, Chancellor’s Professor and an organizational science, psychology and management professor, will discuss being a good steward of time in meetings.

Community members who will participate are Darryl Bellamy Jr. ’12 of CAMPUSSPEAK talking about fears; Khalia Braswell ’16 M.S., founder of INTech, will address technology and access; Michael Johnson from Atrium Health who will speak on innovation; and Paul Marks, founder and owner of Over the Counter Improv, will talk about humor and leadership;

UNC Charlotte doctoral student in health services research Keith Murphy ’16 MPH will discuss artificial intelligence, and UNC Greensboro student Alexus Widemon will address “What having a parent in prison taught me about potential.”

Fifty student tickets will be available for purchase starting Monday, Feb. 25, at the Barnhardt Student Activity Center Ticket Office; the cost will be $10 each on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tickets for faculty, staff and the public go on sale on Monday, March 4, for $20; they will be available until sold out. TEDx rules restrict ticket sales to a total of 100.

Michael Maksymowski, assistant director for Leadership & Community Engagement in the Division of Student Affairs, is the leader organizer for TEDxUNCCharlotte. The Family Council is a co-sponsor of the event.
