Special leave awarded by N.C. General Assembly now available

Wednesday, August 1, 2018

The N.C. General Assembly recently awarded a one-time additional five days of Special Annual Leave Bonus to eligible leave-earning employees in the state effective July 1, 2018. Those working less than 12 months and those in part-time positions will earn a pro-rated amount of time.

Eligible employees will receive an email notification from the Office of Human Resources and will see the balance reflected in Kronos, the University’s timekeeping system, as of Aug. 1, 2018, retroactive to July 1. It is listed as BONSAL.

BONSAL leave may be used for any purpose for which regular vacation leave would be used, pending supervisor approval, except for donation as voluntary shared leave.

This new leave is different from previous bonus leave awarded in FY 2017-18 (listed as BONSPL in Kronos) because it may reduce the amount of vacation leave over the 240-hour cap that converts to sick leave each calendar year.

Eligible leave-earning employees who have more than 240 vacation hours at the end of the calendar year and have used this new leave (BONSAL) during the calendar year will see the used BONSAL leave subtracted from the number of vacation hours eligible for conversion to sick leave.

More information is available on the BONSAL FAQ page.

Additional questions may be directed to the Benefits Office at Benefits@uncc.edu or 704-687-8134.

Note: The University is awaiting guidance from the UNC System Human Resources Office regarding the annual raise process. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
