Charlotte 49ers senior linebacker Juwan Foggie has been nominated for the 2018 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List.
The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team is comprised of college football student-athletes and one honorary head coach who make outstanding contributions in the areas of volunteerism and civic involvement. These individuals embody the true spirit of teamwork and giving back through commendable acts of kindness.
The Wuerffel Trophy, known as “College Football’s Premier Award for Community Service,” is presented annually in Fort Walton Beach. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
Foggie was named honorable mention all-Conference USA in 2017 by the league’s coaches and was an all-Conference USA second team selection by Pro Football Focus. A converted wide receiver, Foggie started 11 games as a junior and was third on the team with 74 tackles.
A member of the Charlotte 49ers Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and a “veteran leader” in the 49ers Leadership Academy, Foggie is involved in a variety of community service projects. This past year, he participated in the YMCA Miracle League All-Star Game, the Levine Children’s Hospital Dance Marathon, the campus-wide Habitat for Humanity Niner Build, women’s basketball’s Education Day, the CBCC Charlotte 49ers Blood Drive, the SAAC Cares Holiday Donations Drive and baseball’s Greensboro Tornado Relief Drive.
He helped distribute donations to the Ronald McDonald House and the Project 658 Childcare Program and took part in the Rocky River Elementary 9/11 Day of Remembrance.
In addition to his extensive outreach into the community, he was part of the APPLE Training Institute in which student-athletes identify ways that athletic departments can address substance abuse, and he has taken part in the Student-Athlete Career Development Program and volunteered at the Student-Athlete Career Night.
Foggie is a sociology major who is on pace to graduate in December.
