A team of Lee College of Engineering students will join competitors from around the world at the 31st annual National Concrete Canoe Competition, being held June 23-25 at San Diego State University.

The contest, sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), is a hands-on learning experience. More than 200 teams of civil engineering students researched, designed and constructed unique concrete canoes during the academic year.

The UNC Charlotte American Society of Civil Engineers team placed first at the 2018 Carolinas Conference to qualify to compete in the national contest. Janos Gergely, associate professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering, is the team advisor.

Dubbed by ASCE as “America’s Cup of Civil Engineering,” the national concrete canoe contest features “powerhouse teams that have mastered the art and science of the concrete canoe,” and the best teams have a strong understanding of engineering materials.

Twenty-five teams qualified for this year’s national competition, including two teams from Canada and one from China.
