Nationally, colleges and universities are under increasing pressure to lower expenses. One way UNC Charlotte is taking the lead to save its students money is through the use of e-texts for scholarly monographs, which are often specialized, supplemental course materials.

The Department of Dance in the College of Arts + Architecture will host the North Carolina Dance Festival Friday and Saturday, Jan. 24-25, in the Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts.

Greg Pillar, William Lee Associate Professor of Environmental Science and Chemistry at Queens University of Charlotte, will discuss food and climate as the second speaker in the 2014 Great Decisions lecture series. The talk will be at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 22, at UNC Charlotte Center City, Room 204.

Three scholarships, worth up to $8,100, are available for selected individuals to attend the highly regarded Leadership Development Program offered by the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro.

Textile and fiber artist Janet Lasher will display “New Works: Figurative Sculptures in Paper” in the Student Union Art Gallery through Friday, Jan. 31. It features handmade cast paper sculptures.

Members of the UNC Charlotte community will perform in the Office of Women’s Programs’ production of “The Vagina Monologues” scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 30, through Saturday, Feb. 1, in Cone University Center, McKnight Hall. Performances will be at 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday with a 1 p.m. show on Saturday.

Crisis management expert Judy Smith, the real-life inspiration for ABC’s “Scandal,” will speak at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 28, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall. The talk is sponsored by the Center for Leadership Development as part of its Forty-niner Forum.

At its December planning meeting, the Division for Student Affairs staked its claim to community engagement as more than 225 staff members brought items to help clients during their stay at the Safe Alliance shelters at the various surrounding counties.  These shelters provide a safe and supportive environment for those in need of a sanctuary from abusive situations.

The 49er Gold Rush 5K, presented by Novant Health, is scheduled for 9 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Belk Track and Field.
