Congressman Patrick McHenry (10th District) and Brett Keeter (’99), congressional district director and former UNC Charlotte Alumni Association president, recently visited campus to learn more about UNC Charlotte’s Data Science and Business Analytics initiative.

Junior Austin Halbert from Shelby is among honorees from across the United States selected as a 2014 Newman Civic Fellow, presented by Campus Compact. This national distinction is given to student leaders “who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country,” according to the Campus Compact website.

The Lee College of Engineering Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is the 2014 recipient of the Provost’s Award for Teaching Excellence.

The University Advising Center (UAC) in University College received this year’s Provost’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Academic Advising. 

UNC Charlotte will host the conference “Harnessing the Power of Data” from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, May 13, at the Ritz-Carlton in Uptown Charlotte. This one-day event will bring together leading experts from industry and academia to discuss the most recent trends in “Big Data.”

On the April 29 edition of "The Live Wire," Inside UNC Charlotte's streaming webcast, Sophia Jordan-Marshall, senior associate director of programs in the Recreational Serivces Department and chair of the Advisory Committee to the Chancellor for Employee Health and Wellness, will discuss health initiatives for faculty and staff members.

Belk Gym will take a “time out” for renovation starting this May, reopening in 2015 with air conditioning for the gyms and workout facilities, upgrades including a new fitness center, and more classroom amenities. Renovations begin May 2014 following Commencement.  Belk Gym will be closed for the duration of construction.  The building is expected to reopen fall 2015.

The Charlotte Venture Challenge (CVC) concludes Thursday, May 1, with a finals competition and entrepreneurship conference in the University’s PORTAL Building.

Chancellor Philip L. Dubois continued the effort to strengthen connections throughout the region by spending the day in Statesville on Wednesday, April 23, to speak with civic and business leaders.  This trip to the Iredell County seat was the most recent stop in a series of visits to the 12 counties that comprise the greater Charlotte region.

The Student Union, Activities and Recreation (SUAR) Department will hold a retirement reception in honor of Jerry Mann from 3  to 5 p.m., Friday, May 9, in the Student Union Art Gallery Lounge.

A photography exhibition in honor of Holocaust survivor and UNC Charlotte professor emerita Susan Cernyak-Spatz opens with a community reception at 5 p.m., Sunday, April 27, in the College of Education, Room 402.
