Karen Cox, professor of history, will be the featured speaker for a fireside chat at 6 p.m., Wednesday, March 14, at the Harris Alumni Center at Johnson Glen.
Cox will discuss her recent work “Goat Castle: A True Story of Murder, Race and the Gothic South.” After a presentation on the book and her writing process, Cox will participate in a question-and-answer session.
Publishers Weekly noted Cox’s book is a definitive look at the 1932 murder of Jennie Merrill, which occurred during a botched robbery of her Natchez, Mississippi, estate.
As a writer, Cox has published numerous essays and articles on the subject of Southern history and culture. Her first book “Dixie’s Daughters: The United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Preservation of Confederate Culture” won the 2004 Julia Cherry Spruill Prize from the Southern Association for Women Historians for the Best Book in Southern Women’s History. She also authored “Dreaming of Dixie: How the South Was Created in American Popular Culture.”
