Former CIA director to talk national security challenges

Former CIA Director John Brennan will present “U.S. National Security Challenges and Opportunities” at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, March 1, in the Popp Martin Student Union, Movie Theater, as part of the 2018 International Speaker Series.

In his talk, Brennan will base his comments on knowledge and experience he acquired during a 25-year career with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). He worked as a Near East and South Asia analyst, as station chief in Saudi Arabia and as director of the National Counterterrorism Center.

Currently, Brennan is a Distinguished Fellow for Global Security at the Center on National Security at Fordham Law School, a Distinguished Non-Resident Scholar at the University of Texas at Austin and a senior advisor at Kissinger Associates Incorporated. He served as CIA director from 2013 to 2017, advising President Obama on counterterrorism strategies and helped coordinate the U.S. government’s approach to homeland security, including its policies for responding to terrorism, cyberattacks, natural disasters and pandemics.

A graduate of Fordham University, Brennan completed a master’s degree in government with a concentration in Middle Eastern studies from the University of Texas at Austin. He speaks Arabic fluently.
