Softball stadium named for longtime fan Sue Daughtridge

Ceremony to name softball stadium

In a ceremony before the 2018 softball home opener on Wednesday, Feb. 14, the Charlotte 49ers officially dedicated Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium.

Through a generous donation from the Daughtridge family to EXPONENTIAL: The Campaign for UNC Charlotte, the softball stadium now honors the longtime 49ers fan.

The Daughtridge family's support of the 49ers dates back to 1976 and includes attendance to many basketball games at the original Charlotte Coliseum on Independence Boulevard.

Sue Daughtridge, who passed away in October 2015, attended an untold number of games to various 49ers sports with her friends and family. Her daughter, Susan Daughtridge, saw fit to honor her mother when approached about the opportunity.

"I was so glad that (Director of Athletics) Judy (Rose) asked for our participation," stated Susan Daughtridge. "I'd been feeling like I should do something as a tribute to my mom – but I didn't know what. When she suggested this -- it did not take a whole lot of thought. It was going to be a good thing for everybody."

Sue's grandchildren, Robert and Laura, immediately seconded the idea.

"I can't be more pleased to have such a strong supporter's name on our softball facility. Sue had an obvious love of sports and a genuine love for the 49ers," said Rose. "She is a great role model for the young women who will play there."
