The First Citizens Bank Scholars Medal Committee is soliciting nominations for the 2015 award. This award recognizes outstanding scholarship, creativity and/or research among senior full-time faculty members. Each year the University with support from First Citizens Bank presents this award in order to recognize and foster the advancement and diffusion of knowledge and creative endeavors.
The Charlotte 49ers Athletic Foundation provides scholarships for more than 400 student-athletes in 17 varsity sports. Membership benefits include basketball parking and halftime hospitality for season ticket holders and a Charlotte 49ers calendar; the contribution is tax deductible, too.

The second season of Charlotte 49ers football starts Thursday, Aug. 28, with an away game against the Campbell University Camels; Charlotte’s opening home game is Saturday, Sept. 6, against Johnson C. Smith University.
Sixteen starters are among the 53 returning letter winners, including starting quarterback Matt Johnson and leading rusher Kalif Phillips.
Fumie Kato, a faculty member in the Department of Languages and Culture Studies, is among the five finalists for one of UNC Charlotte’s top honors – the Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence.
The 2014-15 state budget provides an across-the-board salary increase effective July 1, 2014, for employees who are subject to the State Personnel Act. The salaries of all full-time permanent and probationary SPA employees, including those on time-limited appointments, will be increased by $1,000.
Charlotte Engineering Early College, located on the Charlotte Research Institute campus near CRI Deck 1, will open Monday, Aug. 25. The high school’s initial enrollment of 100 freshmen will be dropped off in personal vehicles or in one of six buses operated by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
Classes get under way Monday, Aug. 25, at the new Charlotte Engineering Early College, located in the shadow of EPIC. It is the first of its kind for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS).
Elizabeth Hardin, vice chancellor for business affairs, recently was named one of Charlotte’s Chief Financial Officers of the Year by the Charlotte Business Journal. She was honored in the category large nonprofit/government organization.
Jonathan Crane, associate professor in the Communication Studies Department, is one of five finalists for a prestigious UNC Charlotte honor – the Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence. Prior to the official ceremony to name the award recipient, scheduled for Friday, Sept.
Fumie Kato, associate professor in the Department of Languages and Culture Studies, is the 2014 recipient of the Bonnie E. Cone Early-Career Professorship for Teaching. Her selection was announced during the annual University Convocation Tuesday, Aug. 19.
Chancellor Philip L. Dubois focused on the University’s past and future in his Convocation remarks, noting in a highly competitive world of higher education, interest in UNC Charlotte continues to climb.
