This fall, MAX, the UNC Charlotte College of Arts + Architecture Mobile Arts & Community Experience, will host programming for ourBRIDGE for KIDS, a local nonprofit organization that serves refugee children.
Set up as a mobile outdoor classroom on the campus of Aldersgate retirement community, MAX will serve as an afterschool and weekend learning center where classes in gardening, art, music and movement will take place Thursday through Saturday from Sept. 17 through Oct. 12. Among the activities offered will be art projects led by art education students from the Department of Art & Art History, under the direction of Jane Dalton, assistant professor of art education.
Founded in 2014, ourBRIDGE for KIDS provides culturally relevant and experiential learning opportunities, one-on-one English literacy tutoring, homework help and healthy meals to local refugee and immigrant children in kindergarten through fifth grade. The nonprofit organization will open its new community center on the Aldersgate campus on Sept. 17.
Funded by a generous grant from the Knight Foundation, MAX was designed and constructed in 2015 to serve as a collaborative tool for community engagement and public performance. Following the Aldersgate residency, MAX will move to Symphony Park at SouthPark, where it will transform into a performance stage for the 27th annual Latin American Festival on Saturday, Oct. 14.
