New Continuing Education course to prepare future audio engineers

Wednesday, March 22, 2017

UNC Charlotte Continuing Education, in partnership with Ed Stokes, a professor in the University’s Lee College of Engineering, will offer a new course to teach aspiring audio engineers the state-of-the-art computer-based Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) software AVID Pro Tools.

Students who complete the classes will take the AVID Certified User: Pro Tools Software certification exam, which is included in the course.

AVID Pro Tools is considered one of the industry standard DAW software applications; it is used by large commercial recording studios, smaller home project studios and music venues.

Used in the production of audio, Pro Tools software allows PC or Mac users to record sounds, voices and music clips and tracks. Users can apply effects, such as reverb, delay and equalization, then mix the tracks to create audio pieces like songs. The software also allows users to produce master recordings ready for commercial release.

“The class will give anyone who would like to produce high quality audio pieces the knowledge to do a professional job,” said Stokes, professor of electrical and computer engineering and an AVID certified instructor for Pro Tools 101/110. “There is a demand for certified Pro Tools users in commercial recording studios and music performance venues, but musicians and music makers also find the technology very interesting. They can take personal control of how their music is heard without having to go to a studio.”

Stokes, who also is a musician, teaches undergraduate courses on acoustics, DAWs and electronic music synthesis.

The AVID Certified User: Pro Tools 101/110 class starts on Tuesday, May 30, and meets in the evenings through June 30, on UNC Charlotte’s main campus.
