Beginning Feb. 20, the University will no longer determine residency status for undergraduate students.
A centralized, uniform process, known as the Residency Determination Service (RDS), has been created to determine residency for tuition purposes and for the administration of state financial aid.
The RDS resulted from a legislative directive from the N.C. General Assembly for UNC General Administration (GA), the N.C. Community College System (NCCCS), the N.C. State Education Assistance Authority (SEAA) and the N.C. Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU) to create a centralized process.
In order for an undergraduate student to receive the benefits of in-state tuition and/or state-funded student aid, a residency determination from RDS is required. A student only will have to complete the RDS one time generally, instead of seeking separate residency determinations at multiple colleges and universities. Undergraduate students will be directed to RDS during the admissions process.
All inquiries about initial determinations, reconsiderations or appeals for undergraduate students should be directed to RDS, the sole authority for undergraduate residency determinations. The RDS website, www.NCresidency.org, provides answers to many of the questions students and parents may have during the process. The UNC Charlotte Residency Determination Office does not have access to applications or information submitted through RDS.
The UNC Charlotte Residency Determination Office (temporarily relocated to Cedar Hall, Room 34B) will continue to determine initial residency, reconsiderations and appeals for all graduate students. The UNC Charlotte Residency Determination Office also will continue to service graduate students with any residency questions or concerns.
