Wednesday, January 30, 2013

The Extended Academic Programs unit recently received Quality Standards Certification from the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA). The certification recognizes the unit’s commitment to provide quality service to the University’s distance education students.

Dennis McElhoe, director of credit programs, noted the certification is an acknowledgement of “our unit’s effort to comply with nationally recognized standards of the USDLA and best practices in distance education as it relates to our unit’s work on behalf of the University, including the services provided to our distance education students and the faculty who teach in distance education programs.”

In presenting the award at a ceremony Wednesday, Jan. 30, John Flores, USDLA chief executive officer, commended UNC Charlotte for its overall excellence in quality programs observed and evaluated, and he spoke highly of the University’s commitment to quality in undertaking this voluntary review process.

Provost Joan Lorden, who accepted the award with McElhoe, expressed pride in the accomplishment. “The review identified places where programs have been truly exemplary. We look forward to building upon this review as we expand our programs.”

USDLA’s Quality Standards Certification is awarded for a five-year period, subject to performance and annual renewal. The review process is comprised of three primary elements: a standards of practice inspection, code of conduct quality standards compliance and a commitment to continuous improvement. The standards of practice include administration, leadership and management, student affairs, teaching and learning and infrastructure.

To continue to adhere to the high standards of USDLA certification, Extended Academic Program is committed to ensuring quality in the design and delivery of its distance education programs by:

  • Conducting the unit’s activities in accordance with the highest ethical standards and best practices
  • Providing prospective students with the most current and accurate information possible to make sound choices for their educational objectives
  • Continuing efforts to facilitate student access to the effective delivery of resources designed to support a successful learning experience
