Israeli peace activist to give community, campus talks

Thursday, January 17, 2013

Israeli scholar and peace activist Gershon Baskin will visit Charlotte Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 6-7, to give talks both days.

Baskin is the founder of the Israel Palestine Center for Research and Information, a joint Israeli-Palestinian public policy organization seeking to promote peace-building initiatives. He served as the organization’s director from 1988 to 2011.

He will speak on "The Failed Israeli-Palestinian Peace Process: Valuable Lessons Learned" at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 6, at Charlotte’s Temple Beth El, 5101 Providence Rd. He also will lecture at 12:30 p.m., Feb. 7, in the College of Health and Human Services, Room 281.

Adviser to two Israeli prime ministers, Baskin has gained considerable first-hand experience in grappling with the many issues that have hampered efforts to negotiate a peaceful end to the conflict.  He played a pivotal role in the secret talks between Israel and Hamas that resulted in the release of captured Israeli soldier Gilad Schalit.

UNC Charlotte’s Department of Global, International and Area Studies in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and Temple Beth El are sponsoring these free, public talks.
