Shoring up mental health during winter months

Thursday, January 3, 2013

Research indicates that for some individuals, the winter months pose unique challenges to health and well-being. The Advisory Committee to the Chancellor for Employee Health and Wellness (ACCEHW) offers the below suggestions on how faculty and staff members can beat the winter doldrums and enjoy this much-maligned time of year.

1.  Get some sun every day.  At least 15 minutes of direct sunlight increases vitamin D and boosts mood, hair quality and skin complexion.

2.  Brighten up your home.  Open the curtains or blinds, use brighter bulbs or decorate with brighter colors.

3.  Eat a healthy diet—not just what you crave.  Eating a balanced meal regularly can keep your mood in check.

4.  Get moving.  Physically active people have better mental health.

5.  Develop a sleep routine with a sleep/wake schedule and stick to it.

6.  Take a break from life’s daily stressors.  Do yoga, meditate, or listen to music to unwind.

7.  Socialize with friends and loved ones who can provide a sense of connection.

8.  Take a trip some place warm.
