49ers for Life annual blood drive set for Jan. 22

Wednesday, January 2, 2013

The student-led 49ers for Life blood drive will be held from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 22, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center.

This is the fourth consecutive year for the blood drive, which is being organized by a number of student organizations in conjunction with the American Red Cross. Universities from across North Carolina compete to collect the most units of donated blood; Appalachian State University is the current title holder.

Last year’s drive collected 874 pints; organizers have set a goal of 1,000 units for the 2013 49ers for Life effort.

According to organizers, blood supplies are typically low after the holidays and during the winter, but the need for blood is constant. One pint of blood potentially can save the lives of three people.

Students, as well as faculty and staff members, can participate in this campus-wide community service project. Appointments to donate can be made online (use sponsor code 49ers for life).

All donors will receive a pint of Blue Bell ice cream and a “Staking Our Claim by the Pint” T-shirt.
